The Golden Ratio in Cosmetic Dentistry

An article by Sabine von Sinner

In cosmetic dentistry, the golden ratio (1.618) is often used as a guide to create a harmonious smile. To apply this proportion practically, clinicians use a specialized instrument called the Golden Section Divider1. This unique circle automatically divides a measurement according to the golden ratio: when the visible width of a central incisor is measured with the large branch, the small branch instantly indicates the ideal width of the lateral incisor (approximately 62%).

In practice, the tool is used during photographic smile analysis, on plaster study models, or while creating a wax-up. It helps ensure that the proportions between central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines are balanced. For example, if a central incisor measures 9 mm in visible width, the lateral incisor should ideally be about 5.5 mm to maintain visual harmony.

The Golden Section Divider thus allows objective aesthetic analysis, guides the design of veneers or crowns, and improves communication with the patient. However, it is not a rigid rule: every smile is unique, and the proportions should always be adapted to the patient’s facial morphology, gender, and aesthetic expectations.
